The Greatest Show On Earth Still Has It Going On

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Oh it’s been awhile since I sat through a Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus show. But all that changed the other day when I went old school. Today with the fashionable and modern Cirque du Soleil selling out performances, it was a nice to see this family entertainment hasn’t gone away. With kids in tow I sat there enjoying myself. And I must say the circus did not disappoint. Truly entertaining. A great family venue, these guys worked hard. From the acts to the crew there wasn’t a hitch in the show. Even when the trapeze artist missed on the “quad” flip you still marveled at the feat well worth a hand of appreciation.

We had celebrity seating which was a treat. You get pretty close to the action since you’re on the floor but not so close that you would be in danger. No they don’t do this when the elephants or tigers show their stuff. That would be unsafe, but if you’re looking for that little extra by all means pay the extra money for this “step right up” spectacle. And don’t forget to buy your kids the funny paper hats. A great souvenir to go along with your celebrity seating pass. Yes the hologram pass comes with paying for premium seating and for being part of the show.

Jelly Beans Soothes The Soul

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I can never get enough of jelly beans. Kidney shaped, colorful and flavorful, jelly beans seemed to appear almost everywhere these days fighting for your sweet tooth alongside of chocolate. And it doesn’t just appear around Easter time. But unlike chocolate, jelly beans are easy just to set out on a small bowl placed anywhere in the house for company or just for self-indulgence. Today there seems to be an endless array of sugar flavors. Want a Tiramisu? You can have it. Want some mouth-watering strawberry cheesecake? You can have that as well. In fact picking out your favorite ones from a mixed assortment is half the fun. And if you happen to make a mistake in your choice, how bad could it be? So next time when you head to the movies grab yourself some popcorn and enjoy the show. Oh, I meant popcorn jelly beans. It’s the quieter choice.

iPads Fly Outta Stores

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Lines formed outside of Apple stores all across the country as techies needing their latest fix waited to be the first to own a piece of history. Apple claims to have sold more than 300,000 iPads on the first day. That’s no small feat. One teenager took a bat to one and made a video that is being seen on YouTube. That is one way to become famous. Performance art for the masses. Whether you agree with the teenager or not the last time I checked it had more than 300,00 views. The number 300,000 seems somewhat coincidental. But in time I would suspect Apple to sell more iPads then teenagers trashing the hell out of one.

Yet before you plop down some of your hard earned money these iPads may not be for everyone. For instance if you are a multi-tasker you won’t be able to run more than one app at a time. If you are you might have to wait for the next generation of iPads. And although you can call someone on it it doesn’t make a good case of being an iPhone unless you long for those days of boom boxes when wedged up on shoulders snugged to the ear.

Chocolate Never Goes Out Of Style

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Why all the attention of chocolate when it comes to Valentine’s Day? Isn’t chocolate great any day of the year? To me at least it is so I have decided to boycott buying any heart-shaped chocolates or even decorated boxes of chocolate that may contain many varieties but instead will settle on the classic dark chocolate bar. That’s right I’m thinking healthy. I know dark chocolate that contains at least 65% cocoa will have some health benefits for me. This way I can lessen the guilt if I indulged myself if I so choose. Now there is the organic chocolate bar to consider. Not sure if it is any more healthier for me or if I’m saving the planet and stuff like that but I do like the packaging some of these chocolate manufacturers have come up with. Seeing endangered species on the wrapper makes a good argument to buy the bar, but I won’t settle for that trick. I am after quality of taste. That alone will keep me coming back for seconds. A second chocolate bar that is.

Hand Written Personal Letters Need To Stay Alive

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Does anyone mail hand written personal letters anymore? The way technology has developed people are spending more time writing emails than the hand written letter. Let’s hope that the mailed letter will not end up like the eight track player. Maybe it’s because postage has gone up dramatically over the years? C’mon $.044 cents! Maybe long hand written letters are too arduous to tackle? Text speak with short cut techniques is faster that is for sure. Or is it that we just don’t know how to say things more than a sentence or two? With email so much part of our lives as well as hand held cell phones that are hooked up to web service, people are so much more connected.

Love letters once mailed by postage are now showing up in a person’s email box. I hate the thought that someday my kids would look at a hand written letter and ask – what is it daddy? That’s why I make it a point my kids hand write a personal thank you note to those who were nice to buy them birthday gifts. And it is so much more appreciated by those generous folks who want to keep the hand written letter alive too.

Reality TV Is Getting To Me

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Well, at least Top Chef is. If you are a food junkie how can you not sit and watch the drama that unfolds on this hit cable show? Granted the action is in the kitchen and not so much outside of it. And that’s a good thing, because what’s not to like about competing chefs going at it under the clock. Sure the producers of the show make it interesting with setting up the game rules each week and it doesn’t hurt to take the chefs out of their comfort zone now and then. That is why talent alone may not get the chef to the top.

Granted the dishes these chefs create each week are not the kind of dishes the average home cook whips up at home. These chefs are talented. They may not have all studied in France or have gain wisdom from apprenticing in some other culinary country, but they do know their way around the kitchen. A great feature of the show that points this out is the opening quick fire challenge. Here chefs bust their butts to put out a dish in the shortest of time often making do with what they have to work with on foods that may not be familiar to them.

What the show is not is a how-to-cooking show. If you want that you’ll have to switch over to the Food Channel.

Farming Virtual Reality Style On Facebook

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

In this age of instant messaging, Bluetooth, super high speed internet, and the idea of all things immediate, comes the phenomenon of Facebook. Gone are the days of writing long letters to lost friends or calling their childhood homes to find them. Making a connection is easier than ever. Simply join, post and search. Presto! Instant re-connections.

Now this fast paced world has infiltrated itself upon the honorable career of farming. Well, not real farming, but the virtual kind. Now you can grow seeds in hours, harvest in days and reap the monetary benefits immediately. Welcome to Farmville! Small town life on the small screen.

Farmville is a community driven game accessed through Facebook. It’s gratification is addicting. You create an avatar farmer to represent you (and to work really hard for you!) on your farm. You’re given a small plot of land and the tools to plow and plant your crops. Available also are trees, animals, farm buildings and decorations. Everything you need to build your domestic, rural dream.

Plants are grown in hours or days and harvested for “cash”. The cows are milked, the sheep shorn, and the apples picked off the trees all for money. Oh goodie! I can buy more seeds! I can expand my plot! But be forewarned…better check in a few times a day or your “ready to be harvested” crops will wilt and die. Money lost!

The most important aspect of Farmville is the need for neighbors. Like real life, you cannot get by on your own. Your neighbors will help you weed your land, give you gifts of trees or livestock (or virtually alive-livestock) and allow you to move up in the Farmville world. Dis your neighbors and you will not be rewarded! So there it is again, the instant fulfillment of connecting with friends far away.

For someone like me who is not blessed with the greenest of thumbs, Farmville allows me to be a great farmer. It may not be real life, but surreal life is a lot of fun to be a part of. Now excuse me, but I must go harvest my wheat.
